- Caused most often by motor vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian-related accidents.
- Responsible for causing 80,000 debilitating injuries and 50,000 deaths every year.
- A significant disruption to the family, a reason for loss of income or earning potential, and a source of large expenses.
- Most often diagnosed as "mild"; however, even the effects of "mild" brain trauma -- a medical term that does not denote a mild injury but refers to the conditions of the injury, such as loss of consciousness for less than 30 minutes -- can be devastating and permanent.
