Air Force reservist killed in Maryland motorcycle accident

Maryland residents are all well aware of the dangers of accidents on the roadways. This is especially true for motor vehicle accidents involving motorcyclists because motorcycle-drivers are often exposed to dangers not experienced by other drivers. For this reason, motorcycle crashes have a higher rate of serious injuries and death compared to other types of roadway accidents.

A recent fatal crash involving a motorcyclist highlights these dangers. An active-duty reservist from the Dover Air Force Base was killed in a motorcycle accident in Maryland. The accident involved the victim and another motorist. The Maryland State Police are currently investigating the accident.

There are several factors that contribute to the dangers of injuries in accidents involving motorcyclists. Because of their size, motorcycles are harder to spot by drivers of other vehicles. This is especially true at intersections. Approximately 70 percent of motorcycle and vehicle accidents happen at intersections. Road hazards are another danger for motorcyclists. Small obstacles such as potholes, debris or railroad tracks can be a major hazard for motorcycle drivers.

It is important for motorcyclists to understand these risks and protect their rights following an accident. The statistics regarding motorcycle versus vehicle accidents are staggering. In two thirds of accidents, the driver of the other vehicle caused the accident by violating the motorcyclist's right of way. Motorcycle drivers are also nearly 26 times more likely to die in a crash than a person in a vehicle. Motorcyclists are five times more likely to be injured in an accident.

Those who have been involved in a motorcycle accident, or their loved ones, may be able to file a claim against the responsible parties. It is important for motorcyclists to be aware of their legal rights and the possibility of recovery and compensation should they be involved in an accident.
