Maryland workers: Keep an eye on safety this month

Workplace accidents can happen in any environment and to any worker, but it is true that some types of injuries may be more common in certain industries. For example, construction workers may suffer broken bones or head injuries while office workers may be more likely to suffer back injuries or carpal tunnel syndrome. But there are some injuries that all workers can be in danger of suffering, such as eye injuries.

Did you know that October is National Eye Injury Prevention Month? All this month, safety advocates are encouraging people to focus on protecting their eyes from serious injury. Employers and workers all across Maryland may want to consider some of the tips that have been offered to protect people from suffering painful and permanent damage to their eyes.

Eye safety tips may seem relatively straightforward, but during October, employers and employees may want to refocus their efforts to prevent eye injuries.

  • When working outside, people should wear sunglasses with UV protection to avoid damage caused by the sun
  • Workers who handle or are exposed to chemicals or outdoor conditions should always wear eye protection to prevent injuries caused by splashes, spills, wind and loose debris
  • Make sure protective eyewear fits properly and is free from structural defects
  • Prevent eye strain by taking breaks every hour if you sit at a computer screen for several hours at a time

Protecting your eyes on the job can relatively simple, but it is often overlooked by people who may not realize how serious damaging an eye can be and how quickly these accidents can happen. But by complying with workplace safety guidelines and making sure the proper precautions are taken during jobs that could cause damage to a person's eyes, these injuries can be avoided.
