Maryland State Highway employee fatally falls on patch of ice

In Maryland, there was recently a serious construction accident that took place in Silver Spring. The construction accident took the life of a 56-year-old man on Thanksgiving day. The man allegedly fell in a freak accident, according to the police lieutenant.

The news of the accident spread on Nov. 28 as the details were released. The lieutenant claims that the man walked onto the construction site to do some work and fell on a patch of ice. He believed there were only about two feet of ice on the ground at the time of the accident, according to the news, but the man still fell and struck his head. A coworker stated that he wasn't sure if the man had been carrying anything or not, but he believed the 58-year-old had hit his face on the concrete.

With such a loss taking place so early on an American holiday, you would have thought that the ice would have been eliminated through salting or other methods, however the news reports that the ice was still visible hours later in the same spot where the man slipped and fell. Police reported that the man didn't seem to be carrying anything at the time of the accident, but they were able to locate a hardhat near the spot where he fell. Now, the Maryland OSHA is going to be investigating the incident, and a medical examiner is going to do an autopsy; police don't think foul play caused the accident.

Simply treating the ice at the construction site could have saved this man's life, and if you've seen similar unsafe areas at work, you might find yourself wondering what you can do about it. Injuries suffered at work due to unsafe conditions should be investigated, and you have a right to compensation.
