The many challenges facing individuals who suffer brain injuries

Of all the human organs, the brain is the most complex and vital. The brain not only controls all bodily processes, but also allows an individual to think and process information, control muscles and movement, recall memories and feel and control emotions.

In cases where a brain injury occurs, an individual may suffer numerous cognitive, physical and mental impairments. A traumatic brain injury may result from a number of causes. From an injury suffered at birth to one suffered in a car accident or serious fall; doctors often struggle to provide brain injury sufferers and their family members with a long-term prognosis.

Any damage suffered to the brain is permanent. While the brains of some individuals who suffer brain injuries appear to make new and alternate neural connections in non-damaged regions of the brain to compensate for damage suffered, a change or deficiency in normal cognitive functioning always remains. Some brain injury survivors experience reduced cognitive functioning while others may suffer adverse physical or emotional deficiencies.

Many individuals who have suffered a traumatic brain injury are not able to work. Social Security Disability Insurance benefits can aid these individuals and their families in obtaining medical care and monthly benefits to help offset the fact that an individual or caregiver is not able to work and earn a sufficient income.

It can be difficult to obtain SSDI benefits. Many first-time SSDI applications are rejected on the basis that an applicant failed to adequately detail their condition and its disabling effects. An attorney who handles SSDI matters may be able to assist in obtaining benefits in a timely manner.
