Do I Have Enough Car Insurance?

Our firm represents individuals who have been injured by the negligence (fault) of others. The only action our clients can take to protect themselves is to have as much Underinsured Motorist coverage as they can afford and no less than $100,000.00. Underinsured Motorist coverage provides coverage for your injuries if the at-fault driver has no insurance or less insurance than your Underinsured Motorist coverage.

Did you know that, according to USA Today, the average price of a new car in 2016 is $33,560?

Maryland law only requires a minimum insurance policy of 30/60/15.

That's:

  • $30,000 - in liability per person for bodily injury
  • $60,000 - per incident for bodily injury
  • $15,000 - in property damage

If you are involved in a motor vehicle collision and you are at fault and the car's fair market value is $33,000, then you are paying $18,000 out of pocket to save a few dollars.

When our clients ask us how much liability coverage they should have to protect themselves if they cause an accident, our answer is the same as with Underinsured Motorist coverage. They should purchase as much liability insurance as they can afford and no less than 300/300/100. We also advise our clients to talk to their insurance company about purchasing an umbrella insurance policy.

Umbrella insurance provides additional coverage if a claim is made against them that is above their policy limits. If you cause an accident, and the damages are greater than your insurance coverage, you are personally responsible for paying out-of-pocket for those damages.
