The SSDI process: What you need to know

For those who have recently become afflicted with a serious injury or condition that makes it difficult for them to work in Maryland, Social Security Disability Insurance may seem like a good option. SSDI benefits assist those who are unable to continue working because of a condition or illness they have acquired, and many depend on these funds to make ends meet. The list of people who are waiting to be approved for SSDI benefits, however, is extensive. In fact, it can take months, even up to a year to be approved. It is essential to know how the process works so that you can expedite your application through the approval procedures.

First, you will want to make sure that you are eligible for benefits. In order to be considered, a physician must verify that you will have your condition or injury for at least one year or that the condition or injury will ultimately result in death. In addition, you must have worked a certain amount of time, which is dependent upon your age. You can then begin filling out an application for SSDI benefits. It is crucial that this document is filled out entirely and properly in order to avoid having it sent back for clarification. You may have your benefits denied altogether if the form is not filled out correctly.

Once the application is sent in, the SSA will evaluate your case and determine whether your benefits are approved or denied. If your benefits are denied, you may be able to appeal the decision.
