How to ensure your vehicle is ready for winter

As the winter months are quickly approaching, motorists in Maryland should start preparing for inclement weather conditions. In 2015 alone, 35,092 people across the nation were killed in motor vehicle accidents. A number of those catastrophic collisions were caused by people driving recklessly in icy, snowy, windy, rainy and foggy weather. Furthermore, vehicles that are not prepared to drive in hazardous weather may skid, slide or break down while navigating the roadways.

Before heading out on a blizzardy winter day, it is important to make sure that your tires are filled with the proper amount of air pressure and have sufficient tread to get you safely through the snow, rain and ice. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, stripped tires may slip or skid on slick roads and put you in danger of being injured in a car accident.

In addition to checking your tires, you want to top off all of your vehicle’s fluids, including windshield wiper fluid, antifreeze and oil. By replacing your windshield wipers, you can feel confident that they will work well should you get stuck in a storm.

It is also a good idea to take your vehicle in for a winter inspection. A technician can check your engine, exhaust system, electrical system, brakes and cooling system to ensure everything is in proper order. It is not a bad idea to carry an emergency kit, including a blanket, water, food, flashlight and jumper cables, in your car in case you become stranded for a period of time.

After your car is winter-ready, it is important to drive carefully in stormy weather. Be sure to reduce your speed limit and be on the lookout for negligent drivers.
