Why You Should Purchase Underinsured Motorist Coverage

This past week we had to tell a mother and father that the most we could recover against a driver who lost control of her vehicle and killed their son was $30,000.00. That is because the at fault driver had the minimum liability automobile insurance coverage required by Maryland of $30,000.00 and their son did not have uninsured motorist coverage above that amount.

THREE COMMON MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE AFTER A MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT

  1. NOT CALLING THE POLICE
After an accident a police officer should be called, he can:
    1. Prepare a police report documenting the time, date and location of the accident
    2. Document the fault of the other driver
    3. Document your injury
  2. NOT TAKING PICTURES
Before you leave the accident scene you should take pictures of:
    1. The property damage to both vehicles
    2. The location of both vehicles on the roadway and in relationship to each other
    3. Any cuts, scrapes, bruises or bleeding
  3. NOT GETTING IMMEDIATE MEDICAL TREATMENT FOR YOUR INJURIES
If you are hurt you should get medical treatment ASAP:
    1. If you don't get immediate treatment you may not heal as well
    2. The insurance company will not believe that you were injured if you have not obtained medical treatment for your injuries

Cool Parents Held Accountable in Tragic Motor Vehicle Collision

Maryland's Highest Court sent a clear message to all the "cool parents" out there. Maryland Court of Appeal addressed to what extent adults who allow underage persons to drink alcohol on their property are liable for injuries to an innocent person arising from youth intoxication in Kiriakos v. Phillips and Nancy Dankos, et al. v. Linda Stapf. Both cases involved teenagers drinking alcohol during a party at an adult's house. The teenagers left the house intoxicated and tragically car crashes occurred causing injuries and the loss of life.

Pedestrian accidents are on the rise in DC and Baltimore

After decades of decline, pedestrian accidents have been climbing every year since 2010. This national trend bears out in Baltimore and the District as well - an alarming 60 pedestrian fatalities in the Washington metro last year and more than 1,000 pedestrian injuries.
