Gas tanker overturns in Maryland accident, but damage minimal

A recent motor vehicle accident that occurred on Route 3 in Prince George's County, Maryland, involving 3 vehicles could have been disastrous. One of the vehicles involved was an overturned tanker truck carrying 9,000 gallons of gasoline. Fortunately, only about 100 gallons of the gasoline spilled onto the road, which emergency crews cleaned after they righted the truck. The road was closed for about nine hours during the cleanup.

The three vehicles in the accident included a Mercury Grand Marquis driven by a 21-year-old woman, a box truck driven by a 40-year-old man, and a tanker truck driven by a 40-year-old man. Police believe the 21-year-old woman was merging onto Route 3 from Route 450 when the box truck struck her from behind. The box truck then veered into the path of the oncoming tanker truck. The tanker tried to avoid the box truck, but smashed into the back of it nonetheless, police said. The tanker truck then overturned onto the shoulder of the highway.

It appears that no serious injuries resulted from the accident. The box truck driver and the Mercury driver declined any medical treatment. The tanker truck driver was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was treated and released.

Police officers did not immediately charge anyone in the auto accident. Depending on his injuries, the tanker truck driver may be able to pursue a personal injury claim against either or both of the other drivers. However, at this time it is still unclear where the fault lies. Each party would benefit from obtaining some independent advice about their rights and responsibilities as a result of the collision.
