1 killed and 1 hurt in collapse; company faces charges

When a construction accident happens, you want to know that it's going to be taken seriously. When injured on the job, even minor injuries should be reported, and you should be able to seek the medical treatment you require. You may be pleased to hear that the Maryland state investigators have decided to issue fines and citations in relation to an accident that took place at the Westfield Montgomery Mall in 2013.

According to the news, Whiting-Turner, a Baltimore-based company, had been working on an expansion when one of its contractors was killed. The worker was killed and a second was injured when a 42,800-pound slab of concrete fell in the mall garage in May 2013; that concrete was allegedly not cribbed, blocked, or otherwise secured during construction, which could have led to the failure and collapse.

Now, the company faces at least $11,000 in penalties and state violations, according to the news, because it claimed it had maintained unsafe working conditions that resulted in the accident. The Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation issued some fines, and the company was also cited for safety violations by the Montgomery County safety inspectors. It also faces accusations from federal officials with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

If you've been involved in a serious construction accident or are hurt at work, you deserve to receive the compensation needed to cover your pain and suffering, medical bills, and other financial needs while you recover. If you have questions about your personal injury case, right to compensation, or responsibilities, an attorney may be able to help.
