Construction accident costs worker his life in Maryland

In just over a year, five highway construction workers have lost their lives while performing their duties in Maryland. The 54-year-old man was part of a contracting crew that was clearing trees near Liberty Road on I-695.

A pickup truck slammed into the construction worker when he was on the right shoulder of the roadway. While charges are pending against the driver, it doesn't make the loss any less difficult for the man's family, friends and coworkers.

The other construction workers lost their lives in similar accidents - inattentive drivers who didn't observe the posted construction zones. A 50-year-old man was killed near Bel Air Road on 695 when a car hit him as he was fixing a road sign on the shoulder of the road. Two men, ages 41 and 42, were killed when they were working in Cecil County and were struck by a vehicle. Finally, a 40-year-old man was struck by a car and killed in Howard County while setting out cones.

These accidents are not typical construction accidents, but they emphasize the need for caution and diligence in safety procedures - not just for the workers, but for the drivers on the roadways. Police have issued a warning to drivers that it only takes a moment of distraction to result in a serious or fatal accident, especially in highway construction zones.

Workers' compensation benefits are paid to injured workers or the families of workers who die in workplace accidents. If those benefits are denied, speaking with an experienced workers' compensation attorney may provide the information needed for a successful appeal.
