Individuals that struggle with disabilities at times find that they are unable to care for themselves without assistance. Not all families are able to provide housing or the necessary funds to be able to adequately support the individual either. There is a clear need for support and housing for individuals in Maryland that fit this description.

Accordingly, Maryland and 12 additional states will be receiving a total of $98 million in rental assistance funds that will be allocated to assist individuals in the community that live with disabilities. These funds will give some individuals that live with a disability in Maryland the opportunity to move out of an institutional setting and into a community-based housing option.

These funds are being issued after a collaborative effort on behalf of states, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Medicaid, and Health and Human Services officials. This is a need that called for actions because as one advocate says, “Our nation is strongest when all our citizens are able to fully participate and contribute.” This funding will allow thousands of individuals that live with a disability, not just in Maryland but other states as well, to be able to lead more fulfilling lives.

Individuals in Maryland that live with a physical disability or mental disability that manifests itself in part in an inability to work are in some circumstances eligible to receive Social Security Disability Insurance benefits as well. Often, an experienced Social Security Disability attorney can be indispensable in assisting an individual in pursuit of such benefits in a timely manner. Working through the initial filing process and any potential appeal process can be difficult to do alone.

Social Security Disability Insurance and additional programs and funding like the rental assistance detailed above, are crucial to making sure that all individuals in our community are able to live fulfilling lives.
