An auto accident earlier this week claimed the life of a man from Hanover, Maryland. The 66-year-old man was walking in the right lane of eastbound Dorsey Road in Hanover when he was hit by a car driven by a 26-year-old man from Harmans, Maryland. The pedestrian was transported to Maryland’s Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was pronounced dead.
The fatal crash, which occurred at about 8 p.m., is still under investigation. When officers and paramedics arrived at the scene, they found the victim lying in the road and a 2008 Mazda parked nearby. The car had sustained obvious damage to the windshield. The driver of the Mazda was uninjured.
Police have speculated that several factors contributed to the accident. The pedestrian was wearing dark clothing and was likely not easily seen by the driver. The police’s primary investigation also determined that the pedestrian might have been intoxicated. He also was not in a crosswalk at the time of the crash. Police also said that poor lighting in the area may have factored into the crash as well.
This case is tragic for several reasons: the family of the pedestrian must now go forward without him, while the driver of the car will have to live with the memories of the accident. It seems possible that either side might attempt to find the other liable for the crash, and if poor lighting played a part in the crash, then the municipality might also be liable.
