New drug test may help workplace safety in Maryland

|

If you're injured at work in Maryland while driving or in a factory, the last thing you'll want to find out is that a coworker was on drugs at the time of the accident. If you're injured on the job, you will have a right to seek compensation for your injuries, but the real priority should be making sure that no injuries take place in the first place. Now, a report from Dec. 4 states that a new breath test may be implemented that can actually detect marijuana use. It's hoped that with this test, more people will be kept safe at work.

Any type of drug use can impair your ability to function in the way you need to for work, which is why this drug test could be helpful. In a small pilot study that involved 25 people who were long-term or occasional marijuana users, the test was able to detect the presence of delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC, which is the main chemical in marijuana. It was able to detect the drug on the breath of those who had used it up to 2.5 hours before the test, according to the news.

This could help make you safer at work, because additional studies have shown that those who have consumed cannabis three hours before driving, for example, were twice as likely to cause a serious accident on the road. Now, employers could have the possibility of checking workers before they drive, potentially saving lives.

If you're hurt at work due to carelessness or neglectful coworkers, you may feel the need to seek compensation from your company and those involved. In any case, you may want to speak to an experienced attorney who can help you develop your case.
